Don’t let the name change fool you – the 2015 “The Grain” is still  from the Engelhard Vineyard (now owned by the Simi family, not the Simi winery), but the Hobels decided the give the wine a “name” – It is a beautiful wine that stands shoulder to shoulder with the 2012, 13 & 14 Cabernet Sauvignons from this great vineyard. The 2015 “The Grain” has a brooding powerful nose of blackberry, black cherry and a touch of vanilla. The wine is dense with a weighty, rich palate loaded with black currant, creme de cassis, blood orange and chocolate flavors, framed nicely with fine dusty tannins. As is typical of the prior wines from the Engelhard Vineyard, the finish is carried beautifully by the acidity. Only 85 cases were produced.

Winemaker Notes: “Whereas the 2013 vintage was marked by its tannin profile and 2014 by its transparency of underlying terroir, 2015 is marked by the generosity of fruit. Yields were down dramatically in 2015. First, cooler than normal weather during flowering and fruit set limited the berries per cluster. Second, dehydration at the end of the growing season due to the high temperatures further reduced cluster weights.  As a result, for The Grain, quantities were about 55% of normal but the fruit we did get was fantastic. This site has always provided wines with great structure and tension. With vine age, we have been getting more intense savory notes, and in 2015 we have a perfect balance with the intense fruit forward profile the growing season provided.”
