The Story: Andy Erickson does not need an introduction, the man worked with John Kongsgaard, Paul Hobbs, Bob Levy at Harlan Estate, Staglin, etc. and of course Screaming Eagle! He currently makes Arietta, Ovid, Dalla Valle and his own labels Leviathan and Favia. The Arietta wines have been on fire as of late and this latest release is yet another gem in the rough.
The wine: This rare single block, single vineyard Merlot offers a persistent vibrancy, a blue-purple hue, a fresh, mouthwatering acidity, and a lingering finish with notes of raspberry tart and confectioner’s sugar. The bright, complex, fruit-focused aromas reveal layers of marzipan, blackberry, leather, lavender and musk. The flavors are focused, rich and emboldened by chewy, medium-grain tannins. A wine of power and sophistication, the Arietta Merlot Hudson Vineyards 2013 is the finest possible expression of the thirty year old vines planted on its singular site in Carneros. Only 220 cases produced!
Anthony Galloni 96 Points: “The 2013 Merlot Hudson Vineyard emerges from the oldest vines in Lee Hudson's famous Carneros vineyard. Deep, rich and unctuous, yet impeccably balanced throughout, the 2013 is a real head-turner. Layers of fruit open up in a distinctive, Merlot endowed with real depth and personality. The 2013 is even better from bottle than it was from barrel.”

Coming from the Coombsivile southeastern corner, the 2013 Arietta Cabernet Sauvignon expresses the best attributes of this heralded variety. Aromas of mint, smoke, dark black fruits and sandalwood rise from the glass even as the wine is poured. Notes of black tea, vanilla bean and forest floor follow on the palate. This is a highly perfumed, complex red wine, with firm tannins that build on the finish – a good sign for long aging.
Galloni 95 Points: “The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is dark and juicy from the very first taste. Sweet red cherry, plum, spice, new leather and rose petal meld together in the glass. Ripe, succulent and forward, this flashy Cabernet Sauvignon has enough softness in its contours to drink well with minimal cellaring, although it also clearly has enough depth and density to age well. The 2013 is a super-expressive Coombsville Cabernet from Arietta.“
