The Story:  Big Basin Vineyards was founded in 1998 on an historic site in the Santa Cruz Mountains next to Big Basin Redwoods State Park. The old ranch property was first settled in the late 1800s. Wine grape cultivation had been started by French immigrants by the early 1900s and continued until 1965 when the property was sold by Justin Lacau, who had named the property “Frenchy’s Ranch”, to a timber company. By the 1990s, all that remained of the vineyards were redwood stakes and scattered vines hidden by brush and poison oak bushes.  Bradley Brown’s mission was to restore the historic vineyard site using modern, organic viticultural methods.  The entire property is now certified organic.

The Wine: The wine possesses a strong varietal character on the nose with notes of crushed flowers, Yuzu and orange zest, pineapple guava, and crushed rocks. On the palate, the fine-grained texture and beautiful body is balanced by a strong sense of minerality and vibrant acidity. Notes of flowers, citrus zest, crushed rocks and reduction echo the nose and lead to a long, unfolding finish with terrific length and complexity.

Anthony Galloni 94 Points: “One of the best wines in this range from Big Basin, the 2013 Chardonnay Coastview Vineyard is a real head-turner. Smoke, slate, dried pear and white flowers open up in an understated, crystalline Chardonnay long on class. A slight element of Burgundian-inflected reduction is present at this stage, but it is neither overpowering or dominant. The 2013 spent 11 months in barrel followed by 4 months in tank. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate, as it is terrific. “
