Hudson 2014 Chardonnay "Estate" Carneros

The Story:

Winemakers John Kongsgaard and Christopher Vandendriesche it again! Only 700 of this stunning, very Burgundian-like Chardonnay were produced! This is a very sophisticated wine. Slightly nutty on the nose with hints of citrus and minerality. The wine is lush on impact, slightly oily, full in body with an amazing elegance and lively green apples and Anjou pear flavors. This wine is round and bold, but oh-so stunningly balanced with a finish that does not seems to end!

Winemaker Notes: “2014 was another early harvest, with pick dates between Sept 3rd and 8th. The fruit was ripe and without sunburn, leading to an incredible freshness and balance of flavors. The “Shot Wente” Heritage Selection Chardonnay fruit whole cluster pressing went longer than usual to extract full flavors.  The juice went directly to 85% new French Oak barrels for natural “Wild” yeast fermentation. Fermentation started quickly but still took an average of 12 months to finish. During this time we stirred the barrels weekly until the following November. Bottling was in mid May 2016. The 2014 is a rich and complex vintage.”

Robert Parker 94 Points: “The 2014 Chardonnay is a special heritage selection Hudson made from the Wente clone, which is probably the most popular clone of Chardonnay in all of California. This wine was aged in 85% new French oak and fermented with indigenous yeasts. He never seems to be in any hurry to get his Chardonnay bottled, but this was in bottle, which offers classic white peach, pineapple, honeysuckle and apple blossom, some crushed rock and additional floral notes. It is medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure, and just a top-flight Chardonnay to drink over the next 4-5 years.”
